Fluorescein Sodium (Uranine)
Fluorescein, disodium salt is an orange-red to dark red powder. Water-soluble form of fluorescein. Odorless and almost tasteless. Fluorescein sodium is used extensively as a diagnostic tool in the field of ophthalmology and optometry, where topical fluorescein is used in the diagnosis of corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers and herpetic corneal infections. Fluorescein Sodium is also used in rigid gas permeable contact lens fitting to evaluate the tear layer under the lens. The thyroxine ester of fluorescein is used to quantify the thyroxine concentration in blood.
The disodium salt form of fluorescein is known as Uranine or D&C Yellow 8. Fluorescein is a precursor to the red dye eosin Y by bromination. Fluorescein (Uranine) sodium is widely used as a fluorescent tracer in medicinal and biological applications and tumor infected tissues tracer. Fluorescein (Uranine) Sodium is a representative green fluorophore that has been widely used as a scaffold of practically useful green fluorescent probes. Fluorescein Sodium is widely utilized in numerous applications including ophthalmology, flow cytometry, environmental tracking, and industrial processes.
Additionally, it is preferred in groundwater movement research. Very common use of this product is detection of leaks (tracing dye) – from small engine cooling systems up to large district heating systems.
